What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario, in which practitioners manipulate the soft tissues of the body in order to promote rehabilitation, healing, and relaxation. Massage therapy has been around for centuries, and used in various ways to treat many conditions of the body. It can be used to aid in pain control by stopping painful nerves from firing and by increasing the circulation of blood to areas of injury. Massage therapy can also be used to help in eliminating edema (swelling) from areas of injury by utilizing the lymphatic system and moving fluids to areas that support drainage. Along with helping the muscles and structural conditions of the body, massage therapy aids in the treatment of many respiratory conditions, can enhance immune function, and may also be used to reduce anxiety and depression (Rattray & Ludwig, 2000).
